To address mental health issues and prevent suicides in Indian prisons, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) recommends the "Gatekeeper Model," involving trained inmates to identify and refer those at risk. NIMHANS issued guidelines, emphasizing the prevalence of mental illness and substance use disorder in 80% of prisoners. The "Buddy System" and periodic communications with friends and family are suggested for support. The Ministry of Home Affairs, recognizing the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, urged states to adopt these guidelines. In Tamil Nadu, initiatives like video calls and the e-Mulakat platform facilitate prisoner communication and support mental well-being.
