The piece describes the plight of individuals spending long periods of time in jail while being on trial. Analysing the statistics of NCRB reports, the author highlights that a majortiy of undertrial prisoners in Indian prisons represent a certain section of the society — illiterate or semi-literate and those who come from socio-economically weaker sections of society, within an age bracket of 18-30 years.
