Punjab in India has become the first state to permit prisoners conjugal visits. Inmates demonstrating good conduct can have two-hour visits with their spouses every two months. Over 1,000 prisoners have applied for this privilege. The initiative began in three of the state's 25 jails on 20 September 2022 and by 3 October 2022 it expanded to 17 prisons. As per this scheme, jails need to create a private room with a bed and attached bathroom to give the couple privacy. The program aims to manage inmates' stress, aid their reintegration into society, and address basic biological needs. Certain prisoners are excluded, such as high-risk offenders and those with infectious diseases.
